Weddings

We are really pleased that you are considering marrying in the Parish Church of St James the Great.

A church is so much more than simply a venue for your wedding. Unique and special things become part of your marriage, on the day itself and beyond:-

  • A church wedding will add a spiritual dimension to your marriage. The ceremony includes God and looks to him for help and guidance. God’s blessing is the main attraction for many couples.
  • You will make vows, or promises, in one of our churches.  These vows, made in public, will help you to stay together and grow together. This is a public display of your love, to your family, friends and to God.
  • For some people, a church simply seems like the proper place to get married. Churches can be described as ‘peaceful’, ‘serene’, or having an atmosphere that makes marrying there a particularly special experience.
  • Marrying at St James or St Johns maybe carrying on a family tradition, your parents may have married there or even your grandparents.
  • All our church weddings will have an organist to even make the day more special.
  • We also have a choir which sadly these days not all churches have.  Some wedding couples also like to book our choir to make the day even more extra special.

In marriage you take on a whole new legal status. The vicar knows how to advise and prepare you for your wedding day and everything must comply with all relevant UK and Church of England laws. These are the main legal points to consider before you begin planning:-

  • If you are under 18 years old you will need your parents’ consent to marry and by law you cannot be married in the UK until you are 16.
  • It’s possible to get married in a church that’s away from where you live if you have a certain kind of connection with it. You may be legally connected to a number of churches in different ways. Read more about this.
  • The wedding must take place between 8am and 6pm on any day.
  • Within this parish divorcees can marry in our churches.  This is not always the case in all parishes as this is a personal decision of the vicar.
  • In all instances Banns are to be called before a wedding, even if you are not marrying within the parish but live here.  Please see the section on the calling of Banns.
  • You will need to provide two forms of identification, photo i.d. and something with your name and address on.
