Parish Prayer Group

We all know the power of prayer.  Prayer can sustain and guide us in our daily lives, we pray for family, friends, communities and the world bringing all our concerns to God.  Prayer is a powerful force in the world, just think of all the Christians all over the world praying, it can bring comfort at times of trouble.

To say prayers together is a very moving experience, though sometimes the act of coming together is easier said than done.  All our lives are busier than the generations before us, we are bombarded with information, our modern world expects us always to be running around.  Our Parish Prayer Group gives individuals the opportunity to say structured prayers, taking 'time out' in their own homes through this website.  Even though we may be in our own homes, the prayers are said as a group which, can give comfort knowing we are part of a greater community, we are part of the prayful Christian family.  We may not be gathered together in one place however, our prayers will be combined as one as we raise them to God.

So how does it work?   Start by finding  a place of stillness in your home, sit for a few moments and take time to relax.  Take a couple of deep breaths, light a candle if you have one, or look at a favourite picture or painting, or listen to some relaxing music.  You will also need a bible so that you can look up the psalm for the day, and that is it, everything else you will need is on this page.  So read on...

When you are ready please use this updated form of prayer

O Lord open our lips

And our mouth shall proclaim your praise

May Christ, the true, the only light

banish all darkness from our hearts and minds.

Blessed are you, creator of all,

to you be praise and glory for ever.

as your dawn renews the face of the earth

bringing light and life to al creation,

may we rejoice in this day you have made;

as we wake refreshed from the depths of sleep,

open our eyes to behold your presence

and strengthen our hands to do your will,

that the world may rejoice and give you praise.

Blessed be God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Blessed be God for ever.

The psalm for the day from the list ending with

Glory to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now

and shall be for ever.  Amen.

4th After Trinity (14.07.19)

O God, the protector of all who trust in you.

without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy:

increase and multiply upon us your mercy;

that with you as our ruler and guide

we may so pass through things temporal

that we lose not our hold on things eternal;

grant this heavenly Father,

for our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen.

5th After Trinity (21.0719)

Almighty and everlasting God,

by whose Spirit the whole body of the Church is governed and sanctified:

hear our prayer which we offer for all your faithful people,

that in their vocation and ministry

they may serve you in holiness and truth

to the glory of your name;

through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.  Amen.

Mary Magdalene (22.07.19)

Almighty God,

whose son restored Mary Magdalene to health of mind and body

and called her to be a witness to his resurrection:

forgive our sins and heal us by your grace,

that we may serve you in the power of his risen life;

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

James the Apostle (25.07.19)

Grant O merciful God,

that as thine holy apostle Saint James,

leaving his father and all that he had,

without delay was obedient unto the calling of thy Son Jesus Christ, and followed him:

so we, forsaking all worldly and carnal affections,

may be evermore ready to follow thy holy commandments;

through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord,

who liveth and reigneth with thee

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

6th After Trinity (28.07.19)

Merciful God,

you have prepared for those who love you

such good things as pass our understanding:

pour into our hearts such love toward you

that we, loving you in all things and above all things,

may obtain your promises,

which exceed all that we can desire;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

7th After Trinity (04.08.19)

Lord of all power and might,

the author and giver of all good things:

graft in our hearts the love of your name,

increase in us true religion,

nourish us with all goodness,

and of your great mercy keep us in the same

through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Transfiguration of Our Lord (06.08.19)

Heavenly Father, whose Son Jesus Christ was wonderfully transfigured

before chosen witnesses upon the holy mountain,

and spoke of the exodus he would accomplish at Jerusalem:

grant us strength so to hear his voice and bear our cross

that in the world to come we may behold him as he is;

who liveth and reigneth with thee,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

8th After Trinity (11.08.19)

Almighty Lord and everlasting God,

we beseech you to direct, sanctify and govern both our hearts and bodies

in the ways of your laws and the works of your commandments;

that through your most mighty protection, both here and ever,

we may be preserved in body and soul;

through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.  Amen.

The Blessed Virgin Mary (15.08.19)

Almighty God,

who looked upon the lowliness of the Blessed Virgin Mary

and chose her to be the mother of your only Son:

grant that we who are redeemed by his blood

may share with her in the glory of your eternal kingdom;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

9th After Trinity (18.08.19)

Almighty God.

who sent your Holy Spirit

to be the life and light of your Church:

open our hearts to the riches of your grace,

that we may bring forth the fruit of the Spirit

in love and joy and peace;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Saint Bartholomew (24.08.19)

Almighty and everlasting God,

who gave to your apostle Bartholomew grace

truly to believe and to preach your word:

grant that your Church may love that word which he believed

and may faithfully preach and receive the same;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

10th After Trinity (25.08.19)

Let your merciful ears, O Lord,

be open to the prayers of your humble servants;

and that they may obtain their petitions

make them to ask such things as shall please your;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Then say the Lord’s Prayer

Your own prayers from items on the news, the prayers for the sick, the prayers for the deceased, any prayer you are moved to make.

A short time of listening

Then finish by saying The Grace:

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore.  Amen
